I just found out about The Dinner Garden, which is a non profit that encourages gardening and gives away free seeds. Their mission:
"The Dinner Garden provides seeds, gardening supplies, and gardening advice free of charge to all people in the United States of America. We assist those in need in establishing food security for their families. Our goal is for people to plant home, neighborhood, and container gardens so they can use the vegetables they grow for food and income."
Since 2009 they've given away free seeds to over 40,000 families and over 100 community gardens. How awesome is that?
Plus their website offers a wealth of free info, including recipes and gardening information. My favorite was the advice on building cheap greenhouses and tips for patio and container gardening.
So get free seeds if you need them, donate your excess harvest to local food banks in the spirit of The Dinner Garden's mission, and find out how you can help.
